Featuring six unique interactive experiences

Embarking on a creative journey inspired by my time in residence in the South tower of the University Bridge, this exhibition encompasses six unique immersive experiences that delve into the intricate balance between the bridge’s stark industrial architecture and the natural world, inviting viewers to perceive the bridge not merely as a structure but as a harmonious intersection of human ingenuity and the surrounding ecosystem.

Reaction Diffusion Experience

Made in TouchDesigner, controlled with a Real Arcade Pro Joystick and Nintendo NES Controller

Spawn Scape

The first piece visually interprets daily salmon spawning counts, as users interact with a custom salmon keyboard to switch between last year’s Chinook, Coho and Sockeye counts, a 3d model of the fish school controlled by a joystick helps the user visualize the total count for each day, translating raw numbers into an understandable visual representation.

Weather Synthesis

The second installation draws from live weather data, transforming meteorological information into a multisensory experience. Users become enveloped in the ever-changing atmospheric conditions surrounding the University Bridge, from cloud cover to rainfall and wind speed fostering a deeper connection to the immediate environment.

Plankton Perspectives

Continuing the exploration of the bridge’s ecosystem, the third installation delves into the microscopic world beneath its foundations. Inspired by kayak expeditions collecting water samples from directly under the bridge, this interactive piece allows users to identify and interact with various plankton and invertebrate species. It serves as a celebration of the unseen life thriving beneath the surface—a reminder of the intricate ecosystems that coexist with our urban structures.

Dynamic Bridge Particles

In a more playful installation I have a leap motion controller hooked to a particle system representation of the bridge.  The user can make a fist over the controller and operate the bridge to let sailboats and barges through.

Colorful Catalysts

This installation was inspired by my time spent in the bridge tower. The algorithmically generated interactive visualizations mimic the BZ Reaction. Users become co-creators, shaping the evolving patterns and forms on display using a midi controller. This installation serves as a departure from the specific narratives of the bridge, allowing for a more open-ended exploration of the interplay between algorithms and aesthetic expression.
